Why Savory Hand Pies?
The journey to anywhere important is never a straight line.
When we have a chance to sit down and
think about Portable Pie our little family cannot believe we are here! When we see the bigger picture we now know that all of our struggles and the moments where we felt we were off track we were just training for the things to come.
Many people ask, why did you choose the savory hand pie, or pasty?
Jessica's mother and sister are British citizens and our family has always enjoyed sausage rolls for special occasions and meat pies for comfort food. Our favorite pie, the Signature Pork pie came from a large traditional meat pie we made for special occasions and parties. We always served a slice with a large dallop of Colman's mustard and a salad. When we came up with the idea for a food truck, we were trying to find a way to bring the satisfaction of a savory pie to your fingertips. A traditional pasty has a bread like crust and often doesn't reheat sturdy. When you serve from a food truck, you want the customer to be able to enjoy the whole experience without leaks and a crumb structure that will withstand walking and eating. Was there a way to keep the experience clean, and the hand pie sturdy? Yes! After many years of experimentation we found a crust recipe from the medieval times that used butter instead of lard, and allowed us to pack tons of flavorful fillings in a tight seal for a pasty eating experience like no other. We do not have to use steam holes and no moisture is lost in baking or reheat!
The crust is thin and never soggy! It's a miracle.
When we first started serving our pies in Midcoast Maine we were many customers first experience with a savory hand pie!
It has been a dream come true!
As we pass our second year we are moving into frozen section hand pie sales in grocers and shops near you! We bring the same quality ingredients and flavors, but you don't have to wait for our food truck. Just grab as many as you would like to stock up your freezer and heat up whenever you need a fast hearty homemade meal.
